Three Vanek Plays by Václav Havel: Audience / The Unveiling / Protest
Resident company Otherplace Productions present a triple-bill from world renowned playwright and revolutionary politician Václav Havel. Bizarre, menacing and morally challenging, each tale is inhabited by the author's alter-ego, Vanek.

Written between 1975 and 1978 by the man who would go on to be the first president of The Czech Republic, these one-act works are like distorted polaroids of life under the Communist regime.

In Audience, forced by the state to work in a brewery, Vanek has a long and increasingly surreal interview with his new boss, who is flummoxed by the fact that he is expected to inform on his unusual employee.

The Unveilling is an absurd social ceremony in which Vanek is invited to dinner by friends eager to show off their westernised lifestyle.

In Protest, Vanek presents a fellow writer who has "accommodated to the system" with the seemingly straight-forward opportunity to clear his conscience, but soon finds his own motives being questioned.

Jeremy Pike directs this rare revival. He is the Associate Director of Otherplace Productions and his previous work for the company includes One for the Road and Ashes to Ashes by Harold Pinter.
