The piece begins as model student Benjamin Braddock returns home to his family after graduating. To his parent's dismay he doesn't take up his scholarship or a job, but lounges around the house watching TV, drinking beer and trying to avoid his parent's 'grotesque' social gatherings. At such a gathering he encounters Mrs Robinson, the bored, alcoholic, sexually frustrated wife of his father's business partner. Mrs Robinson instantly makes a forthright attempt to seduce Benjamin ("I want you to know that I'm available to you anytime you want"). Embarrassed, he rebuffs her, but eventually succumbs to her formidable charms. They begin a cheerless affair which ties Benjamin up in knots of guilt and self-loathing. The liaison eventually implodes when he begins to pursue his paramour's daughter Elaine, bringing the wrath of the vengeful Mrs Robinson and her cuckolded husband down on his head.
