Wranitzky Grande Symphonie Charactéristique in C minor (1797), op. 31 Beethoven Egmont Overture, op. 84 Mozart Piano concerto No. 23 in A major, K488
Paul Wranitzky, born the same year as Mozart, was a close friend and member of the same Masonic lodge as his more famous contemporary and in its day his music was as popular as that of his friends Mozart and Beethoven. Listen carefully and you will hear strains of the Eroica Symphony, even though this work predates it by seven years. The overture to Egmont, ranks amongst the most popular of Beethoven’s orchestral works. Composed as incidental music to Goethe’s drama of the same name and inspired by themes of heroism, patriotism and freedom, the overture, powerful and expressive, is one of the last works of Beethoven’s middle period. Mozart said of some of his concertos that they were ‘compositions which I keep for myself or for a small circle of music-lovers and conoisseurs’. Such a perfect masterpiece could not have led the sheltered life Mozart envisaged for it. Come and join the music-lovers!
