Bournemouth Gilbert & Sullivan Operatic Society

Bournemouth Gilbert and Sullivan Operatic Society was founded in 1947 and in the early years performed at the old Palace Court Theatre in Hinton Road. When Poole Arts Centre opened in 1978, the Society moved its annual production to the Towngate Theatre there and our lengthy association with the Arts Centre has continued ever since. In 2002, the Centre was renamed Lighthouse and we have performed every autumn in the main theatre now for nearly 40 years. When the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival was launched in Buxton in 1996, the Society was one of the first amateur groups to take part. Having celebrated our 50th anniversary in 1997 by putting on The Yeomen of the Guard at the historic ruin of Corfe Castle here in Dorset, we then took that show up to Buxton, to great acclaim. The Society has performed at the Festival every few years ever since and The Mikado will be performed at the new Festival location in Harrogate for one night only on 15th August. As a registered charity we make regular donor nations to local charities and in particular have raised well in excess of £70,000 for our local Macmillan Caring Locally hospice as a result of our carol singing every December.
