Unseen in 2018 Season - Beast (2017)

In Deptford Cinema’s ‘Unseen in 2018’ strand, we bring to you the cream of the crop of those films released last year that we feel deserved a bigger audience. The chosen films come from a variety of filmmakers and genres, but all display a unique vision.

British TV director Michael Pearce’s searing feature debut, which rightly earned him a ‘Best Debut’ BAFTA nomination, is an unpredictable and tense psychological drama-thriller that puts the eerily windswept island location of Jersey to great use and features an excellent lead performance from actress Jessie Buckley. Buckley plays Moll; a troubled woman from a stifling middle-class background, who finds herself pulled between the control of her oppressive family and the allure of the edgy local trapper, poacher and general man-of-mystery Pascal (Johnny Flynn). When Pascal becomes the chief suspect of a series of brutal murders on the island, what started off as a mere rebellious fling veers into something far more dangerous for Moll.

"Michael Pearce’s feature debut is a smartly layered thriller that draws haunting drama from a creepy location and an array of plausibly shady characters” - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
