Maverick director Samuel Fuller (Shock Corridor, The Big Red One) teamed up with legendary actress Barbara Stanwyck for what would be his final and most audacious Western – an iconoclastic and unusually feminist spin on that most American of genres. When gunslinger-turned-lawman Griff Bonnell (Barry Sullivan) arrives with his brothers in Tombstone to make an arrest he encounters the fearsome Jessica Drummond (Stanwyck), a wealthy landowner who mercilessly rules over the area with the aid of her posse of hired guns. The pair are drawn to each other, but the Bonnells soon find themselves facing the violent ire of both Drummond’s reckless brother Brockie and her unruly gang of outlaws. With its spectacular black-and-white widescreen cinematography and Fuller’s characteristically ribald, pulpy sensibilities in full force, this is a singular work of frenzied genius from one of Hollywood’s greatest renegades.
