Heat (1995) -Deptford Cinema’s Cinematic Obsessions Season
KEY OBSESSIONS: PROFESSION/ BEING THE BEST THERE IS
85% Fresh on Rottentomatoes: "Though Al Pacino and Robert De Niro share but a handful of screen minutes together, Heat is an engrossing crime drama that draws compelling performances from its stars -- and confirms Michael Mann's mastery of the genre.”
With Heat, cinematic chronicler of single-minded male professionalism, Michael Mann, united screen icons Al Pacino and Robert De Niro for an epic, viscerally exciting tale of crime and obsession set in an enticingly vibrant and vast Los Angeles. De Niro plays Neil McCauley, a seasoned professional at robberies, while Pacino plays Lt. Vincent Hanna, an LAPD robbery-homicide detective tracking down Neil's crew after a botched heist. Both men have excluded everything from their lives that is irrelevant to their jobs: families, friends, culture. Both know it too, but can’t quit what they are so good at. Game recognises game, with both pros, during their cat and mouse game across the city, coming to a sort of understanding about each other’s capabilities. In another life, they might have been buddies. But only one can walk away from the final showdown…
Deptford Cinema’s CINEMATIC OBSESSIONS Season has been made possible with support from Film Hub Midlands through funds from the National Lottery. Film Hub Midlands supports people to watch, show, and make films in the Midlands. The season is part of the nationwide Film Feels campaign; a curated campaign launching in summer 2019 across the UK, designed to celebrate film's unique ability to transport us, to illuminate ideas, and to spark a conversation. Those of us who are obsessive about cinema know full well that the medium allows us to delve into our deepest desires and obsessions; the joy and community to be found in pursuing your passion, as well as the cautionary tales that obsessive behaviour can bring. This year the nationwide Film Feels campaign explores cinematic obsessions- from auteurs to oddballs, imitation to identity theft, Stalkers to Stans, this theme offers a rich feast of genres, icons and subtext for audiences to sink their teeth into.
