Earth (Cert. PG)
Part of the Hippodrome Festival of Silent Cinema
This year’s Opening Night screening Earth is a 1930s Soviet classic directed by Alexander Dovzhenko and accompanied by a magnificent new live score, commissioned by HippFest and performed by Jane Gardner (on piano) and Hazel Morrison (percussion).
This influential and surprisingly beautiful state-sponsored film follows a group of farmers in a Ukrainian village who are stirred by Stalin’s call for collectivisation to embrace mechanisation and unite to purchase a tractor, prompting conflict with the local landowners.
Presented in partnership with National Oleksandr Dovzhenko Centre and the State Film Agency of Ukraine.
