The Prince of Nothingwood

Directed by Sonia Kronlund | 2017 | France - Germany - Qatar | 85 mins | Rating – 15

An eye-opening look at Afghan society and a hugely entertaining portrait of a larger-than-life, ebullient mogul, The Prince of Nothingwood follows Salim Shaheen, the most prolific actor-director-producer in Afghanistan. Shooting, starring in and distributing no-budget films in a war zone for an adoring fanbase for three decades, as Shaheen embarks on his 111th feature, a film based on his own life, Sonia Kronlund – a French journalist who has been covering the war in Afghanistan for two decades – joins Shaheen and his acting troupe for an adventure across the heartlands of Afghanistan. The result is a film that is by turns infectious, fascinating and frequently funny.
“Magical and intrepid… riveting and hilarious” – The Observer

“A fascinating portrait of everyday life in one of the world's most dangerous countries…. by turns amusing and harrowing, and with a compelling figure at its heart, The Prince Of Nothingwood proves how the show really can go on, no matter how terrible the circumstances” - Empire

“Funny and affectionate” – The Guardian

“A hilariously self-aware take on a frontline cottage industry…. wonderfully entertaining” – Little White Lies

"Even if the facts are fiction, you still get the sense of a man who is driven, at least in part, by an urge to bring some sort of happiness by shooting film rather than bullets… wherever there is an envelope, there are those who will be willing to take a risk and give the edge of it a push" – Eye for Film
