Vice (2018, USA, Adam McKay, 2hr 9 mins, 15) is a satirical biopic of former American Vice-President, Dick Cheney that provides a whistle stop tour through US politics from the Nixon administration right to the present day. Beginning with Cheney’s drunken, dissolute youth, the film uses a comic, fourth-wall breaking approach to explore how a secretive, opportunistic bureaucrat quietly became the most powerful man in the world. Christian Bale, physically transformed under a layer of prosthetics, delivers a big, enjoyable central performance that is both subtle and very funny. Boasting an all star supporting cast, McKay’s film adopts an inventive technique to tell a powerful story that will both entertain and make you think.
