Christine Counsell held positions as head of history, deputy head teacher, local authority adviser and SCiTT subject lead before appointed to the University of Cambridge where she developed an influential history PGCE that became renowned for being unusually school-led at the subject level, and highly subject-specific and knowledge-rich in its approach to training. In her most recent role as a Director of Education of a Multi-Academy Trust, serving schools in disadvantaged areas, Christine built teams of subject leaders to shape curriculum design for the Trust’s primary and secondary schools, and founded a large SCITT. Christine has published widely and has worked internationally as adviser, speaker and trainer on curriculum and teacher development, specialising in the teacher of history in post-conflict zones such as Cyprus and Lebanon. In 2016, she served on DfE’s Workload Challenge Group and she currently serves on Ofsted’s Curriculum Advisory Group. Since January 2019, Christine has worked as an independent education consultant. She recently became a Trustee of the David Ross Education and she also serves on the Boards of ‘Now Teach’ and Ark English Mastery.

  • What we mean by knowledge rich
  • What SLT need to know, understand or be doing to support MLTs in their development curriculum
  • How the curriculum can be assessed-how this links to student assessment and also assessment of departments
