Hyde Band

Hyde Band is a successful Championship Section contesting brass band based in Fordingbridge, Hampshire. West of England 1st Section Champions in 2007.

We currently have a young and competent senior band of approximately thirty five members and a very enthusiastic training band of approximately twenty five members, eager to follow on the senior band.

During 1997 Hyde Band became a Registered Charity (No 1059501) and a Limited Company (Guarantee No 03205061) .

We are also proud to be members of The British Federation of Brass Bands (Reg No 2423), The Wessex Brass Band Association, The West of England Brass Band Association and The Southern Counties Amateur Band Association.

In the early years there were several members of the Shutler family in the band all called Bert – which must have been confusing for the conductor. The family tradition is strongly maintained by families including the Cooks, Fletchers, Downers, Rayners, Lush's and Watson's who have a healthy mix of brothers, sisters, husbands, wives, sons and daughters playing today.

It has been many years since the Hyde Band was physically based in the village of Hyde, and whilst it retains the name, the band now rehearses at Forst Forge Theatre Co. in Ringwood. The 35 members of the Senior Band meet at least each Monday and Friday evening from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. (more rehearsals are often arranged, especially before contests). The members of the Training Band meet each Monday evening, from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The total core organisation of the band comprises over 60 persons as in addition to the Senior and Training Band Playing Members, we have 3 Associate Members and 15 Vice Presidents. We are pleased to welcome disabled members. Ages of the Senior Band range from 16 to 70 years.

Although the majority of the members live locally, the band has a catchment area of approximately a 40 mile radius of Fordingbridge. In return for their annual £60 membership fee, most (but not all) Senior and Training Band Members are provided with an instrument; all receive expert musical direction and band uniform. In addition to freely giving of their own free time, from their own pocket all members incur considerable travelling expenses to and from the many practices, contests and engagements for which they receive no payment as all fees and prize winnings go directly to band funds.

During the 1990’s in particular Hyde Band made significant progress gaining promotion from the Fourth Section (under the old National Brass Band Gradings) to our current Championship-Section Grading.
