Humphrey Llwyd: Hanesydd Cymru

Yr Athro Huw Pryce

Yn 1559 cwblhaodd Humphrey Llwyd waith Saesneg yn adrodd hanes Cymru’r oesoedd canol, a adwaenir fel y Cronica Walliae. Dyma osod sylfaen ar gyfer y ddealltwriaeth o hanes Cymru tan y 19eg ganrif, ar ôl i
David Powel addasu’r gwaith a’i gyhoeddi o dan y teitl The Historie of Cambria (1584). Yn ôl Powel, roedd Llwyd wedi cyfieithu cronicl canoloesol Cymraeg. Ond ai dyna’r gwir? Sut aeth Humphrey Llwyd ati i
ysgrifennu ei lyfr mewn gwirionedd, a beth oedd ei amcanion?

In 1559 Humphrey Llwyd completed an English work narrating the history of medieval Wales, known as the Cronica Walliae. This laid the foundations for the understanding of Welsh history until the 19th century after David Powel adapted the work and published it under the title The Historie of Cambria (1584). According to Powel, Llwyd had translated a medieval chronicle in Welsh. But was that true? How in fact did Humphrey Llwyd set about writing his book, and what were his aims?
