Christopher Fleet: ‘Scotland: Defending the Nation’

Aboyne and Dinnet Church, Aboyne, AB34 5HE
Mon 29th July 2019
Scotland has had a uniquely important military history over the last five centuries. Conflicts, rebellions. two world wars and the Cold War all resulted in significant cartographic activity.

Christopher Fleet, Senior Map Curator at the National Library of Scotland, explores the extraordinarily rich legacy of Scottish military mapping in ‘Scotland: Defending the Nation’  (some of them reproduced in book form for the first time) including fortification plans, reconnaissance mapping, battle plans, plans of military roads, tactical maps, plans of mines, and enemy maps showing targets, as well as unrealised proposals and projected schemes.
