Ulster Scots Autumn Lecture: Postcards from Home by David Hume

Meeting Place Hall, First Presbyterian Church, Bangor, BT20 4AG
Thu 19th September 2019
POSTCARDS FROM HOME is an illustrated talk by historian, broadcaster and journalist Dr. David Hume MBE which examines Ulster settlements and placenames abroad. From farm names in Australia to towns in the United States, local settlement can be identified in many different parts of the world. Learn about many of them including Newry in South Carolina, Londonderry in New Hampshire, Ulster County in New York, Tyrone Buildings in Auckland, and others. Some of the names are more difficult to find, such as Fullerton, Lousiana, named after a family from Islandmagee in County Antrim, and just by chance the speaker came across Antrim Road and Belfast Forest in the backroads of the Carolinas. Far from home, these were sentimental reminders of places close to the heart of Ulster settlers across the world.
