Becca Wilkins is a 23-year-old jazz singer, composer and band leader, combining an original style with a fresh approach to vocal musicianship. After making her mark on the Birmingham music scene, Becca moved to London to study for a master’s at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and she’s been busy not just studying, but getting to know (and we hear ‘wow’) audiences and fellow musicians in the overground and underground jazz haunts of the big city. There’s a truly fresh original sensibility to Becca’s music and vocals and she’s been getting stuck into a huge range of projects whilst in London ranging from brass/funk/rock fuelled fusion through to classic jazz standards and blues. As a solo artist, Becca draws on the influences of artists such as Gretchen Parlato, Becca Stevens and Esperanza Spalding, whilst never straying too far from the tradition of Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, so expect a varied programme full of surprises. Smokey’s jazz is delighted to open its musical arms to yet another aspiring but already highly accomplished young jazz musician.
