An opportunity to hear two of the greatest works of Beethoven in a Gala Concert at St Botolph’s Church. The Emperor Concerto, one of the best loved piano concertos, and the Choral Symphony, Beethoven’s last completed symphony. Both works feature sublime slow movements that are amongst the most beautiful ever written. The Symphony’s last movement is the famous setting of the Ode to Joy; in addition to a full symphony orchestra, it calls for four vocal soloists and a large choir. For this exciting concert, the Kingfisher Sinfonia are joined by renowned pianist Nigel Clayton, four hugely talented young vocal soloists and a massed choir comprising Lexden Choral Society, Students from a number of different schools including Colchester Royal Grammar School’s Sixth Form Choir, and a number of the areas finest singers. The performance is preceded by a talk given by Angela Chillingworth, Director of Music at Ipswich High School. The performance will be conducted by John Chillingworth.
Pianist Nigel Clayton studied at the Royal College of Music, where he was a winner of many prizes and was also an international prize winner for accompanying in New York and London. His collaboration with some of the most distinguished instrumentalists of his generation has led to concerts and broadcasts at music clubs and societies over the whole of the British Isles, throughout Europe, and in many other parts of the world. A frequent broadcaster on Radio 3, he has recorded with Kingdom Records, Collins Classics and Virtuosi Recordings, as well as on a private label with Gerard Le Feuvre. Nigel is principal teacher of piano at the North East of Scotland Music School, Aberdeen, and is a Professor at the Royal College of Music.
Soprano Katy Thomson is currently studying with Janis Kelly at The Royal College of Music Opera Studio, where she is an H F Music Award Holder supported by the Rhoddy Voremberg Scholarship. Recent performance highlights include: Soprano soloist for the North Wales International Music Festival with Welsh National Opera and NEW Sinfonia in the world premiere of Rebecca Dale’s Materna Requiem (September 2018); playing Susan Wheeler in the RCMOS production of Huw Watkin's haunting opera In The Locked Room; and soprano soloist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Myths and Fairytales at the Cadogan Hall (March 2018). She is currently preparing for the RCM production of Offenbach's Robinson Crusoe, in which she will play Suzanne.
Mezzo Soprano Holly-Marie Bingham is currently studying at the Royal College of Music’s International Opera Studio where she studies under Dinah Harris, and is supported through her studies as an H F Music Award Holder and is further supported by The Countess of Munster Musical Trust Award, The Josephine Baker Trust, and as a William Gibbs Educational Trust scholar. She has already sung a large number of operatic roles at the Royal College of Music and also for Glyndebourne Festival Opera and on the South Bank. She has given solo recitals at The Barbican Hall, Wigmore Hall, The Purcell Room, Holywell Music Room, LSO St. Luke’s and Leipzig’s Mendelssohn-Saal Gewandhaus; she is an alumna of the Franz-Schubert-Institut, Austria and the International Mendelssohn Academy, Leipzig. Competition successes include; 2nd prize, Maureen Lehane Awards, Wigmore Hall (2016); the Tracey Chadwell Contemporary Music Award from GSMD, and the Neil Vint Alumni Award from her alma mater, Chetham’s School of Music.
Tenor Michael Bell had his first national competitive success as the winner of Ireland’s Catherine Judge Memorial Award. He went on to read Music at the University of Cambridge, where he was a choral scholar singing in the choir at St John’s College, and now studies with Russell Smythe at the Royal College of Music. His studies are supported by the Choir Association of St John’s College, Cambridge, the Mario Lanza Foundation, the Josephine Baker Trust and the Big Give.
Bass-Baritone Tristan Hambleton studied at St John’s College Cambridge, where he was a choral scholar, Heidelberg Universität and then at the Royal Academy of Music, London. After graduating from the RAM Opera School in 2015, Tristan made his debut creating the role of Karl in the world premiere of David Bruce’s Nothing at Glyndebourne. Other appearances included Marullo in Rigoletto and Angelotti in Tosca for Oliver Mears’ productions at Nevill Holt Opera. Tristan has performed with The Hallé, The London Mozart Players, The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, The English Chamber Orchestra, The Hanover Band, Le Banquet Céleste and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Highlights this season include Messiahs with Marc Minkowski in France, Purcell Odes with Damien Guillon in Rennes, touring with the Hanover Band, a return to Welsh National Opera and Lessons in Love and Violence at The Royal Opera House Covent Garden. Future engagements include roles at Welsh National Opera and a concert tour of Sweden.
Conductor John Chillingworth for many years was Principal Cellist at English National Opera, and played as a guest principal with many of the major orchestras in Great Britain. He was always in demand as a conductor and coach at the London Conservatoires and pursued a busy teaching career. Since moving to East Anglia, John’s career interests have broadened and he fulfils a variety of engagements including being conductor of Lexden Choral Society, MD for a number of musicals, an accompanist and as an examiner and adjudicator; his latest project is the launch of a professional swing band. John also works as a composer and arranger having arranged music for jazz bands and other instrumental ensembles and for the Gents of St John’s. He is an increasingly busy composer; last summer a children's musical he was commissioned to write for schools in Felixstowe received a number of performances, an organ piece was premiered in the Sunday series of organ recitals at St John’s College and a choral piece was performed at St Botolph’s in November. He is currently composing a number of pieces for performances in 2019.
