Forum Books Presents Brian Bilston

Wed 19th June 2019
Forum Books, Corbridge, NE45 5AW
It's fair to say that we’re a little excited to announce that elusive, pipe-wielding wordsmith and Custard Cream connoisseur, Brian Bilston is coming to Corbridge!!

“To my surprise, I’ve written a novel. ‘Diary of a Somebody’ is a tale about love and loss, family and loneliness, crime and punishment, Wittgenstein and bin day.”

It’s January 1st, and Brian Bilston is convinced that this year his New Year’s resolution will change his life. Every day for a year, he will write a poem. It’s quite simple. His life certainly needs some improvement: his ex-wife has taken up with a new man (a motivational speaker and marketing guru); Brian seems constantly to disappoint his son, Dylan; and at work, he is drowning in a sea of spreadsheets and management jargon. Poetry, then, will be his salvation.

Part tender love story, part murder mystery, part exploration of a wasted life, and interspersed with ingenious, funny and touching poems about the mundane and the profound, Diary of a Somebody is a wholly wonderful novel.

‘The English comic novel, whose death this year was announced prematurely, is actually alive, well and in the safe hands of Brian Bilston. Here is a wonderful, laugh-out-loud comedy of suburban despair…’
- Jonathan Coe, author of ‘Middle England’

‘Glorious. I will be astonished if I read a more original, more inventive or funnier novel this year.’ - Adam Kay, author of ‘This is Going to Hurt’

‘Nobody must find out about this unique gem, because I’m giving it to EVERYONE, and I want to appear clever and discerning. It’s a very funny/touching/novel/ poetry kinda book all about the big/little stuff, and above all, it’s eminently wrappable.’ - Dawn French

With a rapidly growing and devoted online following, including the likes of J.K. Rowling, Ian Rankin, Grayson Perry and many others, Brian has been described as the Laureate of Twitter and the people’s poet of our turbulent times.

We love him and we know you will too!!
