MONIAIVE GUITAR FESTIVAL

Moniaive Guitar Festival returns next month with an all-star line up featuring some of the World’s leading acoustic guitarists.
Kicking off the event on Valentines Night is Tony McManus, the World, and Paisley’s, leading Celtic Guitarist. Now living in Canada Tony tours the World, playing, teaching and collaborating with other top performers. At Moniaive he will be playing with Julia Toaspern, a multi-talented musician from Berlin who combines classical training on violin and voice with a wide interest in genres such as jazz, baroque and traditional music.

Duck Baker is one of the world’s foremost fingerstyle guitarists who plays in a variety of styles: jazz, blues, gospel, ragtime, folk, and Irish and Scottish music. He has written many instruction books for guitar.
He was born in Washington, D.C. but grew up in Virginia where he first played in rock bands before developing an interest in acoustic music and jazz. He’s lived and worked all over the world but is now based in Reading.
Among his records that have received the most critical acclaim in years past are The Kid on the Mountain, the 1981 release that was the first ever solo guitar record of Celtic musicand Spinning Song, the CD produced by John Zorn dedicated to the music of the great jazz pianist/composer, Herbie Nichols. Acoustic Guitar magazine described Spinning Song as “one of the best guitar albums ever recorded – by anybody.”

Preston Reed
One of the most influential and innovative guitarists of the past quarter century, Preston Reed invented integrated percussive guitar playing in the late 1980's, revolutionising the way the acoustic guitar is played and inspiring generations of musicians around the world ever since.

Since 1979 Preston has released fifteen critically-acclaimed albums and performed on six continents. His long teaching experience includes The Swannanoa Gathering, where he taught Kaki King, his own week-long workshops in Scotland and his recent masterclass at Berklee College of Music. His 1994 instructional video, The Guitar Of Preston Reed: Expanding The Realm Of Acoustic Playing continues to set today's and tomorrow's top players on the path to developing their own musical voices on the instrument.

Born in Armonk, New York he started playing when he was eight
In the fall of 1972, after playing at a party for a friend of his sister's, Reed was invited to perform in concert with legendary Beat poet Allen Ginsberg at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. It was his first serious gig. In 2000 Martin Taylor booked him to play a guitar Festival in Ayrshire. There he met Catherine Maguire, whom he later married and now lives with in Girvan. He’s a frequent visitor to Moniaive.
For many ears he taught a summer guitar school in Girvan. One of his former pupils was Ed Sheerin, then aged 13.

Steve Hicks and Lynn Goulbourn

This duo needs to introduction to Moniaive and have played here many times. According to Duck Baker, Steve is one of the top four finger style guitarists in the UK. He’s also a highly skilled luthier. Lynn Goulbourn is an exceptional singer and songwriter. The music that they produce as the duo Hicks and Goulbourn is characterised by pure acoustic tones, reflective lyrics, well crafted arrangements and intricate, complicated guitar work. Their live performances are also highly entertaining with engaging anecdotes and humour.

The festival will be a mixture of formal concerts, masterclasses, in conversation with the musicians and a chance to hang out with them in Scotland’s Famous Festival Village.
