From landing to legacy
Come to Downpatrick this Saint Patrick's Day and take a relaxing coach tour of the Home of Saint Patrick. Explore the sites were the renowned man spent his life. Join local guide Duane Fitzsimons and get a unique insight into this historic landscape.
Departing from Downpatrick, take in the tranquil setting of Struell Wells. The most complete set of wells they have a history stretching back almost 1600 years. Next up pay a visit to Saul Church. The site of Patrick's first church this place has an other worldly aura. It was to here that Patrick returned, in old age, and here that he died.
Afterwards we stop off at Saint Tassach's Church in Raholp. This 10th Century Church is one of the oldest in the area. Tassach, who is buried here, heard Patrick's dying confession. He was a famous metal worker and lifelong friend of Patrick.
On the way back to Downpatrick we stop off at the Mearing Well. This was Patrick's first holy well. From here we follow the route of the funeral cortege to the place of Patrick's burial. Before arriving at Down Cathedral we stop of for tea and coffee.
This coach tour was run annually by Albert Colmer who passed away in December 2018. Albert was a well known councillor and passionate about the history of the area. As a renowned historian and founding member, the Lecale and Downe Historical Society are sponsoring this initiative in his memory.
