The Theorbo Weekend - From London to Venice with Matt Wadsworth and Julia Doyle (soprano)

From London to Venice

17th century London and Venice were veritable melting pots for
artistic talent, scandal and creative thinkers alike.

What better to evoke the passions and torments of life in London by
the wonderfully fused song art and poetry of John Dowland and Henry
Purcell, and in Venice by the exquisite master pieces of three of the
most daring composers of the time,
Francesca Caccini, Claudio Monteverdi and Barbara Strozzi. A wonderful
blend of poetry and music, which is as moving to the soul today as it
was 400 years ago.

Matt Wadsworth who has moved back to Norfolk is an internationally sought after theorbo and lute player with many recordings to his name. Immensely popular with his colleagues, he came to Raynham Hall to play the theorbo for us in the Marble Hall and we were enchanted.

Julia Doyle is a superb soprano particularly drawn to baroque and early music.  Her clear golden voice is perfect for the resonant and warm acoustic nature of the Marble Hall at Raynham.

This recital is roughly 60 minutes long with no interval. A champagne bar will be open from 5.45pm
