We That Wither Beneath

Gloucester Guildhall, Gloucester, GL1 1NS
Thu 21st March 2019 7:30PM

Join South African born poet Thembe Mvula for an evening of storytelling through poetry, in the premiere launch of her debut poetry collection We That Wither Beneath.

Accompanied by violinist Jessica Thompson and guitarist Nathan Ardaiz, Thembe brings a nostalgic, honest and moving multidisciplinary performance showcasing some of the pieces featured in the book to a live audience. Thembe started performing as a spoken word artist five years ago, and has since shared her poetry at a range of platforms including the TEDx stage, the UK Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and was a finalist in the Roundhouse poetry slam in 2017. Her debut poetry collection We that wither beneath was shortlisted for the Melita Hume poetry prize in 2017. Drawing from her experiences of childhood in South Africa, growing up in Gloucester and navigating her sense of belonging, Thembe’s poetry explores themes of home, love, loss and healing mainly through the lens of relationships, with a vulnerability that is brave and beautiful.

“We that wither beneath plays with and breaks the familiar…it is a book that works itself out via images, sometimes raw, sometimes ethereal” – Vahni Capildeo
