Masses & Motets from early to modern - Excalibur Voices

Sat 9th February 2019 7:30PM
Hospital of St. Cross, Hampshire, SO23 9SD
Come and hear sublime choral music - Byrd and Tomkins, Frank Martin and Morten Lauridsen -  in the atmospheric church of the Hospital of St Cross

Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir - “the greatest a capella work of the twentieth century” – is one of the pinnacles of chamber choir repertoire. It’s an extraordinarily varied and passionate account of the mass, one which the composer long kept hidden, regarding it as his personal dedication to God. William Byrd by contrast coolly published his famous Latin setting of the mass in Protestant England: then a criminal offence.

These two great works are set into context by beautiful motets: the Martin by Renaissance works of similar heartfelt devotion; the Byrd by the ear-catching textures and atmosphere of the best of modern choral writing.

Frank Martin: Mass for double choir
William Byrd: Mass for four voices
Tomkins: When David heard
Parsons: Ave Maria
Morten Lauridsen: Ubi caritas
Will Todd: Angel Song II
Vytautas Miskinis: Angelis suis
And the Fantasia “Komm heiliger Geist” by JS Bach.

Approximate running time 90 minutes plus 15 minute interval.

Excalibur Voices
are a high-quality chamber choir regularly performing throughout the south-east of England.
