Love & Loss

Our next concert is themed on “Love & Loss” and promises to be an exciting mix of “something old and something new”.

Hubert Parry’s Songs of Farewell is a set of six choral motets written during the First World War when a number of his pupils at the Royal College of Music were being killed in action. The texts are taken from poems by British poets and from Psalm 39. The choice of texts are thought to reflect a yearning to escape the violence of a world at war and to find peace in a heavenly realm.

Accompanying the Parry the choir will sing a selection of well-known and (perhaps) the less well-known “partsongs” a form of choral music written using secular texts. The heyday of the partsong came around the turn of the 20th Century when composers such as Parry, Stanford and Elgar were the principal exponents, often bringing a high-minded seriousness to their settings of great English poetry.

Finally, the concert will include the premiere of music written especially for the choir by Birmingham based composer Chris Long. The work, Songs of the Soul, takes similarly themed texts, including a poem written by a member of the choir, Di de Woolfson, to create a cohesive and moving composition for unaccompanied choir.

We look forward to welcoming you.
