The Exploring Poetry session, with Anna Woodford, gives you the chance to read and discuss contemporary poetry in a friendly environment, finding out more about how to read poetry and which poets to look out for. This will be followed by a poetry reading with Clare Shaw, author of 'Flood', which takes as its starting point the devastating UK floods of 2013 and 2015, whose effects were felt in Clare's home town of Hebden Bridge.
Anna Woodford is a poet and practitioner based in Newcastle. Her new poetry book, Changing Room, is published by Salt. Her debut book, Birdhouse, won the Crashaw Prize and was included in The Guardian's round-up of the best poetry books of the year.
Clare Shaw has three poetry collections from Bloodaxe: Straight Ahead (2006) attracted a Forward Prize Highly Commended for Best Single Poem; Head On (2012) is, according to the TLS, 'fierce, memorable and visceral'; Flood was published in 2018. Clare is a Royal Literary Fellow and a regular tutor for the Writing Project, the Poetry School, the Wordsworth Trust and the Arvon Foundation.
