Ten

Directed by Abbas Kiarostami

Starring Mania Akbari, Amin Maher

2002

89 mins

A screening to celebrate the birthday of late Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami, Ten is a bold and inventive portrait of contemporary Iran set entirely within the confines of a car and shot on digital video. It begins with the beautiful and articulate female driver (the beguiling Mania Akbari) picking up her young son from school. After revealing in a bitter exchange that she has divorced her husband, the film explores the passionate, intimate and often humorous exchanges between the driver and other passengers including a jilted bride, a prostitute, and a devout old woman, over the course of ten short but intricately mapped-out journeys across Tehran.

"Brilliant... remarkable for its strenuous technical simplicity, for its superbly intelligent acting and for the extraordinary, almost unmediated access it appears to give to the lives and thoughts of real, modern women in Iran... challenging cinema conceived at the highest pitch of intelligence"

- The Guardian
