Intro To Elizabeth Gaskell's Novels: Mary Barton

Elizabeth Gaskell's House, Manchester, M13 9LW
Wed 26th June 2019 7:00PM
If you have always wanted to read an Elizabeth Gaskell novel, but haven't quite got round to it, or feel a bit intimidated, then this event is for you.
Mary Barton was Elizabeth Gaskell's first novel, and is the best starting point for a new reader. It's both a love story and an expose of Manchester life in the 1840s, by someone who knew all about it.
In this session, you'll find out why Elizabeth Gaskell chose to write the novel, what her inspiration was, and what was going on in her life at the time. You'll get a chance to hear and read some extracts from the novel, to discuss them and ask questions.
The session will be led by Manchester Writing School's Sherry Ashworth, who leads a reading group at the House.
The event is designed for those who've not read Mary Barton yet. You're not expected to have read the novel, and nor will there be spoilers, so you can go away after the session and immerse yourself!
