The main work in the programme will be Monteverdi's 6-part Missa In illo tempore. Published in the same collection as his famous Vespers (1610), the Mass is based on a motet by the 16th-Century Flemish composer Nicolas Gombert. This will be contrasted with a selection of motets by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and Peter Philips. Philips was exiled to Flanders for his Catholic leanings and, at some point, met Sweelinck in Amsterdam. They are almost exact contemporaries with Monteverdi and their music straddles the gap between Renaissance and Baroque.
