'The Herd' by Rory Kinnear

A superb new drama by Rory Kinnear, directed by Frank Kaye
Kinnear is well-known for James Bond films, National Theatre performances and this fine play, which won the Critics’ Circle Most Promising Playwright Award in 2014 in London and opened in Chicago in 2015 to great notices
The subject is a family get-together which, putting it mildly, doesn't go too well. It’s the 21st birthday of Carol's severely disabled son Andy, who in the end doesn’t turn up at all. Carol is anxious, she has invited Andy's elder sister, Claire, and his grandparents, Brian and Patricia. She hasn’t invited Claire's boyfriend, a performance-poet, and Andy's father, Ian, who abandoned the family and is loathed by everyone in the room - but they come anyway. The Herd is a witty, heartfelt portrait of a family falling apart – then pulling together – when life doesn’t turn out quite the way they wanted.
