THE LIVES OF OTHERS, which won an Oscar for the best Foreign Film in 2007, is a German drama set in 1984 in East Berlin prior to the fall of the communist government. Captain Gerd Weiser, an agent of the secret police, is assigned to surveillance duties on a writer, Georg Dreyman, and his lover, Christa Maria Sieland. As he becomes more and more submerged in their lives, Weiser's own attitude to life, politics and the state begins to change and it's not long before he finds himself in a dangerous situation.
