Smetana Quartet no. 1
Janacek Youth Quartet (Mladi)
Dvorak Quartet no. 13 Op 106
6.45 pm Meet the Czechs
Welcome to another Czech quartet with their distinctive Slavic style, the exciting Zemlinsky – presenting an all Czech programme.
Renowned for their exhilarating performances and crystal-clear playing, they have a busy international career and play regularly at major international venues, including London’s Wigmore Hall, in coffee, evening and BBC concerts, as well as venues such as the Library of Congress, Washington, the Cité de la Musique, Paris, and the Seoul Arts Centre.
Founded over twenty years ago, when the leader was just fourteen, the Zemlinsky delight audiences throughout the world with their spirited and zestful performances and have won numerous prizes including the 2010 Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition, the Banff, Prague Spring and London competitions and the Czech Chamber Music Society Prize, and their touring takes them regularly to Europe, America and the Far East.
Czech music is, of course, something of a speciality and in this programme the ever-popular composers Dvorak and Smetana are joined by the unique and passionate voice of Janacek – in a rather unusual form, namely a brilliant string quartet arrangement, by the Czech composer Kryštof Maratka, of the wind quintet Mladi (Youth) – a wonderful work which translates with complete conviction into the sound world of the string quartet.
