Katie’s Crooked Swing Band are a lively five-piece band that deliver jazz favourites from the 30’s and 40’s with a few modern classics thrown in. Katie Crooks works as a Voice, Speech, Accent and Singing Coach for numerous professional theatre companies and drama schools. She is also a jazz singer with numerous bands as well as running her own group, Katie’s Crooked Swing Band.
Katie explains: “I’ve been a singer of Jazz and Big Band for years but my other love is for Lindy Hop dancing. One day a friend said ‘Why not just combine the two and provide some tunes for my next social dance in Portsmouth?’ and that’s how the group was born!
“We’ve got the lovely David Ward on Guitar, Joe Yeadon on Bass, Micheal Wilson on Sax and Clarinet, and Tom Wright on drums, so it’ll be an awesome night.
“We’ll play some swing dance classics made famous by the King of Swing, Benny Goodman, such as Why Don’t You Do Right and Blue Skies. Our other favourites include It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing, My Baby Just Cares for Me, Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives to Me and Route 66.
“And we’ll throw in a rock and roll tune like Hound Dog and some modern numbers by Melody Gardot with a vintage flavour too.”
