Friends Talk - Paul Emmanuel: Chapel of Hairy Flatness
6.30pm Thursday June 6
Paul Emmanuel’s work uses raw, unprocessed fleece sheared from upland sheep to stretch, twist, weave or comb over painting stretcher bars. He paints directly onto the fronts and backs of these structures. Art paint is squeezed and pushed, mixing and dripping through the gaps, clinging to the hair which reveals the painted form. Through the bringing together of weaving and other textile practices and with reference to the language of mark-making on animals in the landscape, Paul explores materials in conceptually dynamic ways.
