Mrs Darcy's Dressmaker
A one-woman play by Sue Washington with post-show talk, Keeping Jane, by Sarah Howard.
The year is 1837 and Mr and Mrs Darcy are busy planning the wedding of a beloved daughter. Join Mrs Darcy’s dressmaker as she stitches the gowns for this great occasion, and shares snippets of gossip picked up from sitting to sitting. Scandal loves an audience, and the antics of the Darcy family’s wider circle provide more than enough delicious fuel for this 40-minute one-woman play.
After a short interval, Textile Conservator Sarah Howard will share her experience of conserving two surviving textiles reputedly worn and made by Jane Austen, a silk pelisse coat and a cotton patchwork coverlet.
This event is part of the Whitchurch Silk Mill Undressing Austen programme. We are delighted to host one of Destination Basingstoke's artist designed benches on the Sitting with Jane Scultpure trail. Arrive early and admire the bench or check out limited edition giftware in a specially commissioned Jane Austen weave on sale in the gift shop.
