Witney Jazz Presents: Ollie Weston Band - The Music of Billy Strayhorn

Multi-reeds player Ollie (http://ollieweston.com) is head of Junior jazz at London’s Guildhall, he’s also a brilliant composer and much sought after session player. We are delighted he’s agreed to come and present a show that features the music of Duke Ellington’s pianist, co-composer and music director Billy Strayhorn. Mr Strayhorn (where did that surname come from?) was a prodigious composer and arranger and much of his music was harmonically and texturally way ahead of his time and the Duke knew this - using some of the ‘unusualness’ of Strayhorn’s harmonies to create a distinctive style for his hugely successful big band. Pieces like Lush Life, A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing worked alongside the more conventional A-Train and Satin Doll to create music that was distinctive, hugely commercial and has stood the test of time. Ollie will be playing a selection of reed instruments, the fabulous Jonathan Taylor is on keyboards, Paul Jefferies plays upright bass and new to Witney Jazz - Jonathan Silk plays drum kit.
